Scientific understanding of the interdependencies between food, energy, and water systems (FEWS) is of growing importance, as global change creates new risks and potential benefits from the integrated FEWS nexus. Many decisions that influence FEWS nexus issues are made by regional decision makers, but are shaped by national and global dynamics, including socioeconomic and technological changes and international trade dynamics. At the same time, the ability of nations to meet mid- to long-term goals, like the SDGs and climate mitigation, is strongly linked to regional decisions.
This project, co-led by Assistant Professor Jonathan Lamontagne, seeks to develops a new, integrated analytical approach that considers the coupled nature of food, energy, and water systems, while ensuring consistency across temporal and spatial scales. Working with regional partners in several basins in Latin America, this project aims to break down institutional barriers to facilitate multi-sector decision making in different hydro-climatic and policy contexts.
